It all pays off, I promise

I talk a lot about the importance of building a solid skill set and prioritizing knowledge in your creative career.

It helped me land a multi-k deal cocktail photography deal just this week through an agency for an international brand & I know my knowledge, negotiating skills, and confidence in my photography got me that job...

I’ll tell you all about it in a minute, but let me say this first: I’m proud of my knowledge and all the investments I’ve made in it!

It all pays off, I promise.

Sadly, many creative entrepreneurs and freelancers still consider themselves ‘just beginners’ and automatically exclude themselves from the never-ending cycle of investing, learning, implementing, and growing.

They think:

I have such a small business. Investing in a mentor or live workshops is for the ‘advanced’ ones.

I’m not gonna be there anytime soon ...

I’ll just wait a bit more, until ...

I’ll invest in my gear some more ...

But what’s the point of deciding to live in a creative career if you’re not willing to invest in yourself? You’re the most important part of this journey, and the better the input, the better the result!

So what does it take to land a gig like that?

➡️ Creating an outstanding portfolio that says ‘I can help you lift your brand visuals to a whole other level’.

➡️ Practicing and learning lighting and styling skills will help you feel confident about doing the job and also speak to them in a confident voice.

➡️ Being there to listen to your future client’s wishes and speak up, when you have ideas for the photoshoot (or when you think they are starting in the wrong direction).

➡️ Feeling confident that you can troubleshoot problems that arise during photoshoots (which they almost always do 😅).

It’s funny to see how everything is connected and how nailing 1 skill lead me into discovering new ones!

The first beverage job pushed me to explore drink photography, which pushed me to learn to use artificial light. This then pushed me to learn styling, working with ice and condensation, editing, and retouching. And at the end, I still needed the cherry on top - pitching and big negotiating skills, which I used for this recently signed project.

If it seems like there is a lot of work and knowledge behind it all, you’re right. There is a lot.

So why do I always put knowledge on top for myself and in my content for you?

Because knowledge and skills open up the box of possibilities for you!

It doesn’t happen overnight.

I’m so happy I started investing in my knowledge right from the start and restrained myself from buying more props, backdrops and the newest gear releases.

I reached out for help and guidance when it was needed, and it helped me to jump over the knowledge hurdles.

Why not use the power of the community and open up to your peers to help you with their knowledge directly? Getting close-up mentoring allows you:

  • to ask questions on a personal level
  • see exactly how someone is creating
  • getting instant personalized feedback
  • to connect and bond as a human being
